The older charts rightfully spelled the island, “Moskito Island,” as it was named after the Indians of the Moskito Coast around the Bay of Honduras and Belize. When digging the cisterns on the island for Drake’s Anchorage Resort in the 1960s, Bert Kilbride found four clay bowls and a number of tools.

He gave some to the Smithsonian Institute and the late Mendel Peterson, the renowned marine archeologist, who dated them back to the early 11th century AD. It turns out that the Arawaks had a lookout on the top of Mosquito Island providing a perfect view down the throat of what is now Sir Francis Drake Channel. They could spot marauding enemy tribes from miles away. Thus, the name Mosquito Island has nothing to do with its insect population, so don’t avoid it because of the misnomer. It’s a magical place.

The island was recently purchased by Sir Richard Branson. Sir Richard developed nearby Necker Island as a wonderful private getaway for himself. He began renting it to friends and before long his hideaway was booked out for 18 months at a reported $47,000 US per day. This rate is all inclusive for 27 of your closest friends. Sir Richard is now developing Mosquito Island into his own personal resort.
