A Great Mid-Point Break

My family looks forward to the Bitter End Yacht Club (BEYC) as their mid-point break on a charter in the BVI. While being on a boat is typically the best vacation for the captain, and nearly all of the crew, the idea of lounging on white sand beaches, a pool with tropical island drinks delivered to your chaise lounge and every water-sport toy one can imagine, can be enticing for some.

The sailors in the crew don’t have to feel land bound at BEYC, as a few hours in a rented Laser or Hobie Wave Rider flying across Gorda Sound will keep the blood running. Toss in the option for shopping, good restaurants and a store for provisions, and you can see how your entire crew will be happy with a stop at BEYC.

Check the schedule at the resort for special activities. Dinner alone, without the kids, is possible during the kids’ movie nights in the outdoor theater, just steps from the restaurant.

The lure of BEYC attracts a range of Caribbean yachts, from 150-foot mega-yachts to graceful, classic sailing yachts of yesterday, to worldwide cruisers anchored in Gorda Sound with their rails festooned with spare jerry cans for water.

On one arrival, we were disappointed to find a mini-cruise ship moored in the sound near Vixen Point. It just seemed out of place in our version of paradise. One small compensation was the unexpected evening fireworks display high over Gorda Sound, presented by the ship for its guests and enjoyed by all in Gorda Sound.

The Bitter End Yacht Club has extensive facilities as one of the largest resorts in the BVIs, but also has a “Pirates of the Caribbean” feel.
