Rent a Car

If spending anymore than a day or two at Green Cay—or anywhere else on St. Croix for that matter—rent a car. The island is 24 miles long and five miles at its widest point, without a car, its a long, hot walk from one end to the other.

Martin Oliver, the general manager and port captain at Green Cay, will let you use the marina office phone to order the car. Green Cay is about as far from the airport as you can get on St. Croix, but Sal Sampere’s Budget Rent-a-Car is out by Bassin Triangle, just south of Christiansted, much closer than the airport.

Budget will pick you up and take you to its office for the paperwork. Most of the streets in Christiansted are one-way, but outside of town, traffic runs in both directions, so remember to drive on the left. The problem with this is that the cars are all left-hand drive. This makes it dicey to pass a bus on Centerline Road, the main east–west artery on the island. You have to stick the passenger’s half of the car into oncoming traffic before you can see to pass. On St. Croix, as in life, it’s better to be a driver than a rider.
